A wire tracer is an essential tool when drilling or digging during large construction projects. If you find a wire or cable before you dig you can prevent an outage or discover a break in the circuit. If you don’t use a wire tracer and miss something, you could be in a world of hurt or trouble. A wire tracer can work through a variety of methods including: detecting an AC signal added to the circuit by a separate transmitter, detecting the existing 50/60Hz AC cycle, or inducing a signal then detecting it. The most common design for the receiver probe is a colpitts oscillator-based circuit. The probe is specific to a frequency and generally specifically matched to the sending unit. Wire and cable tracers are available in a number of different configurations. Some are designed to work on powered circuits while others are designed for unpowered circuits. Many offer one of the three detection methods listed above. Still others offer battery power while some require AC power.
