  • Q:

If the Pro 2 is wireless why do you need 40 ft of cable?
Asked on 3/1/2013 by Bill from Dauphin Island

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

The cable permits separation of the anemometer from the rest of the ISS, thus allowing the anemometer to be 30+ feet above ground level which is where the National Weather Service has declared the most reliable wind measurements to be located.

  • Q:

How far apart can the Vantage Pro2 console be from the instruments and still get a reliable signal?
Asked on 2/13/2013 by Tutt from Pensacola, Florida, USA

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

Maximum range under perfect conditions is 1000 feet, line of sight. Minimum distance is about 10 feet. A happy medium exists in the 300' range where line of sight is not really needed, though the ability to go around buildings is not helped. The signal strength might be enough to go through another building and still reach your receiver.

  • Q:

Vantage Pro 2, about 5 years old--For the last year, battery needs constant replacement. Is this a power supply issue? What parts?
Asked on 12/28/2012 by Jo from NM

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

The lithium battery (34542-91) in the ISS is a long lived, non-rechargeable backup battery. During the day the solar panel charges up a capacitor on the main board, which is able to power the system overnight. Repeated reports of "Low Battery" do not indicate a bad battery, they indicate that the charging circuit on the main board is failing; If the message reads "low battery transmitter 1" then there is a bad camera size battery on the transmitter board. If this is the case just replace with a 3V lithium Ion Batter CR123A battery (can be picked up at a pharmacy or use part number 68511-36. The message will not go away automatically- it will either disappear overnight (automatically at midnight) or you can go into the setup mode screen and exit to the main screen and the message should go away. Press Done and (-) to get into setup, followed by Done to exit.
If you need to replace the transmitter board (part number 00239FH) you may see this video on how to do so: http://www.davisnet.com/support/weather/Video/index.asp

      A:

The Vantage Pro2 will include a console display with AC power adapter, rain collector, temperature and humidity sensors, anemometer, 40' anemometer cable, and mouting hardware. There are accessories which can be purchased, however, they are not necessary for the installation and usage of the weather station. Please contact our technical service department for discussion of whether these accessories would be needed.

  • Q:

Is it worth having the unit calibrating by the company for the extra $250? I don't know anything about weather stations and want to make sure we get it in working order with the least amount that we will have to do to get it up and running ASAP.
Asked on 12/6/2012 by Erin from Baraga, Michigan

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

Having a NIST-Traceable calibration will allow the peace-of-mind that the unit is reporting the correct information. The calibration report will provide a comparison between known values and reported values. Documented calibrations are nice to have for this purpose; but imperative for applications were accuracy of data is critical, such as research or forecasting models, or where regulatory oversight exists that requires such documentation on a specific schedule.

  • Q:

What country is the unit manufactured in. I have had several bad experiences with Chinese electronics.

      A:

This unit is made in the USA.

Comments about Davis Instruments Vantage Pro2<tm>, Wireless Weather Station:

I have owned the Vantage Pro2 for five years or better and finally started having a few issues. The unit had preformed flawlessly since installation. Customer support is absolutely the best. I did have to ship it back to the company for an "overhaul" which took less than two weeks from sending to receiving back and once again is working like new. Overhaul had a nominal charge being the unit was way out of warranty. It is mounted on the SW coast of Washington State, 50' off the beach and getting it's fair share of wind and rain much less salt exposure. I've had other brands that were nearly as much as this unit, without the longevity and virtually no customer support. If this unit ever becomes irreparable, I will buy another Davis unit. By far the best on the market for the price. I would have given this six stars......

Had to buy a new one after 6 years because mice had eaten all the insulation off the wires, but it was still working. This newer one is even better!

I am a novice weather watcher and a volunteer Firefighter in a small suburb outside Austin. I attended the Skywarn school and asked the NWS meteorologist for a recommendation on a wireless weather station. He recommended David Instruments. I purchased the VANTAGE PRO2, WIRELESS by Pro2. I first ordered the wrong model and Davis was great and gave me a full refund and sent me correct unit. I was able to install the measuring station myself on a staged pole (24' tall). Set up the desktop monitor and default settings. Was able to install entire system in about an hour and a half. Worked perfectly from the beginning (May 20). I love this system and folks at Davis are great!
