  • Q:

    I received the following answer yesterday:

    "There is also a CR123A button cell battery on the sensor suite's transmitter board that needs to be replaced as well as a battery on the console. I would recommend changing both. It can also take up to 24 hours for the low battery error to clear."

    So there are 2 CR123A batteries on the sensor? My user manual only describes one. BTW CR123A is not a "button" battery; CR123A is a cylindrical battery, kind of short and squat.

    I replaced the batteries (3 "C" batteries) in the console and (as noted below) had previously replaced the CR123A on the sensor (last week). Still get the low battery message and still does not display data from about 2 hours after sunset until well after sunrise the next morning. Any further suggestions?

      A:

      If batteries have been swapped out and the Low Battery indicator remains, the transmitter board needs to be replaced. The lithium battery in the ISS is a long lived, non-rechargeable backup battery. During the day the solar panel charges up a capacitor on the main board, which is able to power the system overnight. Repeated reports of "Low Battery" do not indicate a bad battery, they indicate that the charging circuit on the main board is failing, in this case, the capacitor. The capacitor itself is not offered as a replacement part. The transmitter board will need to be replaced. It can be ordered under 00305NQ.

    I have a Vantage VUE sensor model #6357 and console model #6351. I have replaced the sensor battery with a CR-123 3 volt lithium cell (Duracell CR123A) twice, and each time I still get the error message that the battery is low, and the sensor continues to work only in the daytime, suggesting to me that the lithium backup battery is not functioning. Any suggestions?

      A:

      The console and ISS should sync automatically. nsole screen
      • The antenna icon displays with waves flashing around it when the console is
      receiving data from the ISS.
      • The antenna icon displays alone when the console is trying to re-establish a
      lost connection. When no data packets have been received for 10 minutes, the
      console dashes-out any missing sensor readings.
      • The antenna icon disappears when the connection between the ISS and console is lost.
      Enter Setup Mode by pressing and releasing 2ND and pressing SETUP. Keep pressing DONE
      until the “Receiving From...”screen displays. (See “Screen 5: Active Transmitters” on page 8
      for more information.) Wait a few minutes while the console lists all the stations transmitting within range. If the console does not detect your transmitter, check the following:
      • Adjust the console antenna so that it is vertical and in line-of-sight the Vantage Vue ISS antenna.
      • Try reducing or increasing the distance between the ISS and the console. They should be at least 10 feet (3 meters) apart. Maximum range is 1000’ (300 m) line-of-sight.
      Refer to the ISS Installation Manual for instructions on how to check the station for potential transmission problems.

      Installing Batteries
      1. Remove the battery cover located on the back of the console by pressing down on the two
      latches at the top of the cover.
      Installing batteries into the Vantage Vue
      2. Insert three C batteries into the battery channels as shown.
      3. Place the battery cover back onto the console and click it closed.
      4. Check to make sure the console runs through a brief self-test procedure successfully.
      On power up, the console displays all the LCD segments and beeps three times (four times
      if you have a data logger plugged in). A message displays at the bottom of the console,
      followed by the first screen of Setup Mode. Press DONE to skip the message and enter into
      Setup Mode. Setup Mode guides you through steps required to configure the station. .

      A:

      The ISS is rated up to at least 140mph winds by means of wind tunnel testing, however mounting the Vue securely so it won't blow off the mount at highway speeds is always a concern. Don't forget that the Vue expects to be pointed due South to catch the sun and this orients the wind vane to North so your wind direction readings will be truthful.

Our family enjoys monitoring the weather. We live near the ocean on the East Coast, and appreciate the rain and wind speed gauges. We have purchased two Vantage View monitors within the past five years. We bought a second monitor when some of the buttons on display pad on the first monitor stopped working. After about two years, the same buttons stopped working on the second monitor. So we have two monitors that still provide some -- but not all -- data. (And yes, we know it is the display pad and not the sensor).

    I got the Vantage Vue wireless unit to replace a La Crosse unit. It was about twice the cost, but well worth it. The La Crosse had separate components (rain bucket, thermometer/hygromter, anemometer) that had to be hard wired with phone cord and all components were powered by AA batteries in the wireless sender unit. The Vantage Vue has all detectors in one unit that is solar powered with a lithium backup battery. The La Crosse unit also has a reputation for component failure (especially a ring magnet in the anemometer) that is expensive to replace. In fact, I got the Vantage Vue, because the magnet had failed for the second time in two years at about $35 each. I've had the Vantage Vue for about 5 years now and just recently had to replace the lithium battery at $6 a pop (I got two of them). I also get lots of compliments from guests who find the console and information it presents to be fascinating. This was a great purchas and, if you're in the market for a home weather station, this is one of the best on the market for the price.

      Our ground is very difficult to install wood posts in. I used a standard "T" metal post and adapted the mounting brackets to fit the T post. Worked like a charm.

      Excellent. Easy to install and use, and greater precision than competitors. This winter was one of the rainiest on record, and the weather station didn't skip a beat. The data recorder is excellent when you lose power.
