    Can you attach the Davis Mounting Pole to the tripod for additional height?

      A:

      The stand includes two 3-foot (0.92-meter) poles. Combined pole height creates one 5.8-foot (1.77-meter) pole. The tripod will not handle much more, if any, height then this if additional poles are added.

    After several shaky moments servicing my Vantage Vu on the roof line of my garage (VERY STEEP), I have decided to mount it on the ground using your Mounting Tripod. What is the optimum height above ground for such an installation?

      A:

      Ideally, mount the ISS so that it is between 5' (1.5 m) and 7' (2.1 m) above the ground in the middle of a gently sloping or flat, regularly mowed grassy or naturally landscaped area that drains well when it rains. You can also mount the ISS on the roof, between 5' (1.5 m)
      and 7' (2.1 m) above the roof surface. For areas with average maximum yearly snow depths over 3' (0.9 m), mount the ISS at least 2' (0.6 m) above this depth.

  • Q:

    I want to mount my weather station on a shed. The shed roof slopes in one direction so there is no ridge line. All the diagrams etc. seem to indicate the tripod being mounted across a the ridge line. Can the legs of the tripod be adjusted to handle my type of installation? Would I be better off using a pole anchored at ground level instead of the tripod?

    • A:

      While this answer is true, it did not address the original question. I ordered this item based on the information above. When put it together, it was obvious it was not going to work. There is no adjust in the tripod legs, or very little. You can adjust the pole as it sits in the tripod to accommodate approximately 2" of elevation change in 4 horizontal feet. That works out to about a 1/24 pitch. In my case, my roof is a 3/12 pitch.

    In Cody, WY we often get wind gusts in the range of 80 mph. Our roof line is approximately perpendicular to the prevailing winds. Do you recommend two of the mounting legs on the upwind side of the roof apex or downwind?

      Neither mounting option is preferred over the other. The unit will be secure as long as the appropriate mounting practices are followed.

    • A:

      Forget the dumb answer you got from customer support. You can't use lag bolts provided in the ground. You can use landscape spikes (nails) that are 8-12 inches long and they work fine. You can also mount the tripod on pavers or cement blocks by using cement anchors hammer-drilled into the pavers/blocks.

    Im also from western washington and i do get strong winds to...actually getting strong winds right now and i have the anemometer in the yard and its only getting winds to 10mph....the tripods comes with nails and stuff to hold it onto the roof right?
