    • Q:

1 What is the maximum capability of the rain gauge in inches/hour?
Had a wx station by "another mfg" and occasionally came up an inch or more short on a given storm compared to plain old rain gauge. Think the rain came faster than the tipper could accommodate and excess ran over the top.
2 resilience of ISS? Above mentioned system outdoor parts wiped out by pea sized hail. Screen for rain collector bounced out, hail holes in collector cone. Anemometer wiped out, solar sensor broken.
Asked on 5/2/2014 by Mike from 51040

      1 answer

      • STAFF EXPERT

        A:

The maximum rainfall rate this unit can log is 96" per hour. Hail will damage the ISS when severe enough to damage other outdoor use objects, such as automobiles.

    • Q:

I purchased a slightly used wireless Vantage Pro2 weather station. I am going to install it at my new house. The house has what appears to be one of your mounting tripods already installed near one end on the peak of the roof. The tripod has what appears to be one of your anemometers installed at the bottom of the mast that comes out of the tripod. The top part of the mast is bare.

My house has a blue-green metal roof and I am concerned that the temperature sensor might not be accurate in the summer if I mount it on the mast above the roof. I live in northern Idaho.

I would appreciate any advice you could offer.
Asked on 1/3/2014 by Rick from Ola, Idaho

      1 answer

      • STAFF EXPERT

        A:

It is possible that excess radiant heat from your rooftop could artificially raise the sensor temperature, but unfortunately we don't have a solution for you at this time.

    • Q:

I replaced the battery on my Davis weather station and it worked great for a few weeks and now does not send any data to the remotes until the sun comes up. Any suggestions?
Asked on 12/31/2013 by Steve from Minneapolis, MN

      • STAFF EXPERT

        A:

The lithium battery in the ISS is a long lived, non-rechargeable backup battery. During the day the solar panel charges up a capacitor on the transmitter board, which is able to power the system overnight. Repeated reports of "Low Battery" do not indicate a bad battery; they indicate that the charging circuit on the transmitter board is failing. This means that the transmitter board, 30003-52, will need to be replaced.

Recently moved to new residence and reinstalled my station. Got battery message that battery was low. Installed new battery and periodically getting this message. Has been very cloudy in NC the past week. Could there be a problem with the charging mechanism?
Asked on 12/5/2013 by JBT from Winston Salem, NC

      1 answer

      • STAFF EXPERT

        A:

The lithium backup battery needs to be replaced, order part number 34542-91. Directions for opening the housing are found in the Integrated Sensor Suite Installation Manual, and the battery location shown on the back page of that manual.

    • Q:

Are the wireless features of the weather stations affected by the new LED light bulbs being used in the home? Many of the switching power supplies used in these bulbs create a variety of noise across the radio spectrum. For example, my wireless garage door opener is wiped out if one of these bulbs is operated too close to the receiver.
Asked on 10/27/2013 by Rick from Florida

      1 answer

      • STAFF EXPERT

        A:

The manufacturer is not aware of any issues of interference from LED or any other bulbs or lighting equipment.

    • Q:

Is there anything I need to do to my system prior to going thru winter? Will the rain gage be ok during freeze and thaw conditions?
Asked on 10/24/2013 by CHenry from Franklin, IN

      1 answer

      • STAFF EXPERT

        A:

No precautionary measures need to be taken to protect the sensors during the winter. Some users will cover the rain gauge so that there will not be as much to clean come spring time but the rain gauge will not be damaged if left uncovered.

    • Q:

Does theVantage Pro2 keep track of the largest wind gust within a given period of time? I have read several reviews on several sites and ran across a few that indicated they could not track the largest wind gust within a given time frame on their console...is this a limitation in the product or the users?
Asked on 8/14/2013 by Jeff from Goddard, KS

      1 answer

      • STAFF EXPERT

        A:

You should be able to pull data from the past hour from within the console itself. For longer periods of time, you will require the 99800-54 WeatherLink Software.

Does the vantage pro 2 have an atomic self setting clock? if not will this be considered in the future?
Asked on 7/31/2013 by JD from Western NY

      1 answer

      • STAFF EXPERT

        A:

Davis weather stations do not sync with the Atomic Clock. We have not been made aware of any plans to do so in the future.

    • Q:

I am interested in Vantage Pro2 Wireless. Can I also get a wireless anemometer with this unit rahter than the cabled one?
Asked on 7/23/2013 by Dave from Hudson, NY

      1 answer

      • STAFF EXPERT

        A:

The standard package will include a cabled anemometer option of catalog number 34542-64.

You can purchase the wireless version of the anemometer kit separately as catalog number 30003-62.

    • Q:

I live in northern Michigan where the north-south position of the sun changes significantly with the seasons. The sun travels NE to NW in the summer and SE to SW in the winter. What is the best direction for positioning the solar panel?
Asked on 7/15/2013 by Oliver from Charlevoix, MI

      1 answer

      • STAFF EXPERT

        A:

Although direct sunlight is best, if it cannot be obtained the unit will still recharge from dispersed light (but it cannot be shaded). This is why, even on cloudy days the unit still charges. If you are unable to move the solar panel from the sensor to obtain direct sunlight, it should at least be in a position where it is not shaded completely.

Comments about Davis Instruments Vantage Pro2<tm>, Wireless Weather Station:

I have owned the Vantage Pro2 for five years or better and finally started having a few issues. The unit had preformed flawlessly since installation. Customer support is absolutely the best. I did have to ship it back to the company for an "overhaul" which took less than two weeks from sending to receiving back and once again is working like new. Overhaul had a nominal charge being the unit was way out of warranty. It is mounted on the SW coast of Washington State, 50' off the beach and getting it's fair share of wind and rain much less salt exposure. I've had other brands that were nearly as much as this unit, without the longevity and virtually no customer support. If this unit ever becomes irreparable, I will buy another Davis unit. By far the best on the market for the price. I would have given this six stars......

Great for weather and solar data for our area

Internet access is a plus but it would be nice if more detailed information like dew point and UV could be shown.

Had to buy a new one after 6 years because mice had eaten all the insulation off the wires, but it was still working. This newer one is even better!

Comments about Davis Instruments Vantage Pro2<tm>, Wireless Weather Station:

I am a novice weather watcher and a volunteer Firefighter in a small suburb outside Austin. I attended the Skywarn school and asked the NWS meteorologist for a recommendation on a wireless weather station. He recommended David Instruments. I purchased the VANTAGE PRO2, WIRELESS by Pro2. I first ordered the wrong model and Davis was great and gave me a full refund and sent me correct unit. I was able to install the measuring station myself on a staged pole (24' tall). Set up the desktop monitor and default settings. Was able to install entire system in about an hour and a half. Worked perfectly from the beginning (May 20). I love this system and folks at Davis are great!
