  • Q:

Can this be used to measure PH in sausage?
Asked on 2/12/2012 by Bill from new bern,nc

      A:

There is not enough water to cover the tip of this unit to be used with semi-solids and foods. I suggest the 35634-40 spear tipped meter instead. It requires less water and one of its intentions is for semi-solid food testing.

  • Q:

Hello would this meter measure 10ml wine/must samples ?
Asked on 1/15/2012 by albertswift from worksop notts

      A:

I do not suggest it since the PH100 (and even the PH110) only have single junction pH sensors. Single junction sensors and probes become clogged by complex molecules.
I suggest the 35634-40 instead. This will take measurements in small sample sizes, and has a double junction that will not be clogged by the complex molecules in the wine/must.

  • Q:

can I use the pH-meter for a sediment pH test?

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

A pH meter will read the pH of an aqueous sample, not of a solid material with low water content.

  • Q:

Can this be used for meat?
Could you tell me the total price for a ready to use pH meter plus buffers? Do i need any other equipment/ chemicalto be purchased? please include that as well.
Asked on 6/21/2011 by Menon from Vancouver

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Yes, this can be used on the surface of moist meat to test pH. The additional buffers, like the buffer pack 53026-35 is the only other item needed. Price can be found on the product page. Please contact customer service for any price and availability questions.

  • Q:

Does the product need to be calibrated from time to time?
Asked on 5/27/2010 by Anonymous from Portland, OR

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Yes, we suggest calibrating the probe before each day's use. pH probes slowly drift with age and use.

  • Q:

What is the minimum sample volume?
Asked on 5/17/2010 by JWW from Alabama

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

This product comes with a 20ml sample cup. However, the meter doesn't require 20ml to give an accurate reading. As long as there is enough of your sample to completely cover the flat probe tip, an accurate reading will result.

  • Q:

    how to calibrate the instrument?
    Asked on 4/11/2010 by Anonymous

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

A two point calibration with a buffer of 7 plus 4 or 10 is recommended. A one point calibration is also valid. For best accuracy, always calibrate at the sample temperature.
      1. Place electrode into buffer solution (4, 7, or 10) and momentarily press the CAL key. pH 7 should be calibrated first, then 4 and/or 10 pH.
      2. The unit automatically recognizes the solution and calibrates itself to that value.
      3. During calibration, the pH reading flashes on the main display.
      4. When calibration is complete, the unit automatically displays ‘END’ and returns to normal operation mode.
      5. The calibration data is stored until a new calibration is
      performed.
      6. For a two or three point calibration, repeat steps 1-4.

      A:

Yes, the buffer solutions (4, 7, & 10) are sold separately. Please look at part number 53026-35 and check our website for current pricing and availability.

Comments about Extech PH100 Exstik Waterproof Pocket pH Tester:

Great waterproof pH meter with sealed electrode. {there is a model with a refillable electrode but I haven't tried it} Can measure 1 ml quantities of liquid up to a hot tub (100*F). No glass electrode to break. No filling the electrode. Measures pH of semi-solid surfaces (agar). Used this for a total of 7 years in my Research and Clinical microbiology labs. Lasts about 2-3 years with moderate use, so it is short lived, but the price is right. The replacement electrode is half the price of the whole unit and you never know if it is the electrode or circuit board that is bad. Cheaper to buy a whole new meter. Highly accurate to 2 decimals and gives temperature readout as well. Bought one off a famous internet site for home use on my Spa. The first one I received wouldn't calibrate so I sent it back for replacement. The replacement item I received works great. [I mention this because it was a common complaint about this item.] Others complained that calibration was difficult but they probably didn't read the instruction manual before use!!! Calibrations are automatic so no major hassle. The biggest problem - so small that it easily goes missing in the laboratory. Usually in someone's pocket. No major education involved - just 2-5 minutes and your measuring pH. So much better than any of the pH pens, etc., that I have purchased before. They were delicate and didn't last a year and were far from accurate. I like the Exstik much better than a bench top pH meter which uses glass electrodes that are a headache and difficult to maintain. Take it with you- it's extremely tough and durable for the field. It has a protective end cap to protect the electrode. So what if the half-life is 2 years, at the price, one could buy a couple of back ups and spend no where near what a large, bulky pH meter costs. I tried several other hand-held (more expensive) meters that were toys in comparison, and finally found the Exstik 100. It is a professional meter giving professional results. Will (EX) stick with it. Good product for home, field, and lab.
