    Is the probe that comes with the product ok use in small volumes of fluid?

      A:

      The probe must be used in PFA-compatible environments and is *not* suitable for liquid immersion.
      The included probe is a Type K Bead Thermocouple designed for general purpose temperature measuring applications. It has an extremely fast response time, due to the low thermal mass of the exposed tip. The 40-inch (1-meter) PFA cable is terminated with a Type K miniature thermocouple connector with 0.312-inch (0.792-mm) pin spacing. The probe can be used with any temperature measuring instrument that is designed to accept Type K thermocouples and that has a miniature connector input. Above 260°C (500°F), PFA will emit toxic fumes.
      If you need to submerge in fluids, please see probe part number 08466-82 instead.

      No, an AC adapter is not available for this unit, it does not have a port for one either.

    We have purchased the FLUKE Model 51 Series II. How do we go about calibrating thermocouples J Type using this instrument?

      A:

      Calibration consists of two parts: 1) Calibration of the A/D converter; 2) Reference junction calibration, using the ice bath test set.A/D Calibration.

      To calibrate the A/D portion of the thermometer, follow these steps:
      1) Connect the calibrator to the T1 input of the thermometer using copper (nonthermocouple)
      wire and a copper thermocouple connector.
      2) Turn the thermometer on, with a small, blunt probe, press the calibration button
      located on the back and in the center of the thermometer.
      3) The menu on the display changes to “CAL A-d”.
      4) Press 'up' or 'down' to select different menu options.
      5) With CAL A-d selected, press 'enter'. The thermometer prompts “80”. Set the
      calibrator to +80.000 mV and allow the output to stabilize.
      6) Press 'enter'. Wait while it takes A/D readings.
      7) When the thermometer prompts for “-8”, set the Calibrator to -8.0000 mV. Allow the
      output to stabilize.
      8) Press 'enter' on the thermometer and wait while it takes A/D readings. The
      thermometer now shows the measured value in the bottom portion of the display.
      Millivolts appears on the left side and microvolts appears on the right side.
      9) If the measurement is from –7 995.0 to –8 005.0, press 'enter' and the meter will
      return to the calibration menu and display CAL rEF. If the measurement is outside –
      7995.0 to –8005.0, press 'enter' once to return to the calibration menu. Using
      'up' or 'down', select CAL A-d and try the A/D calibration procedure a second time
      starting at step 5.
      10) Using 'up' or 'down', select “CAL donE”, then press 'enter' to store the calibration in
      memory.

      To calibrate the reference junction, follow these steps:
      1) Prepare an ice bath.
      2) Connect the equipment to T1 using K-type thermocouple wire
      and a K-type thermocouple connector. Allow the setup to thermally stabilize at least
      5 minutes after inserting the thermocouple connector into the thermometer.
      3) Turn the thermometer on and select the thermocouple type using the 'setup', 'up', 'down',
      and 'enter' buttons.
      4) Enter calibration mode (refer to the “A/D Calibration” section, step 2).
      5) Using 'up' or 'down', select CAL rEF and press 'enter'.
      6) Press 'up' or 'down' until the upper display matches the known temperature.

      The calibration of every unit is check before it leaves the factory; however, if you require an NIST-traceable certificate, it must be purhcased separately. This calibration with certificate is available as our 17002-10.

      Fluke recommends sending the unit back to them for calibration on a yearly basis. We also provide NIST certificates of calibration from our Metrology Lab.

      This unit comes with a type K bead thermocouple probe. For another possible probe please see part number 08516-55. This is a general-purpose type K thermocouple probe. This thermometer will accept type J, K, T, & E thermocouple probes with a miniconnector. Please contact our Application Specialists at the number indicated on our website if you have additional questions about selecting the appropriate probe for your application.

      This unit does not have recording capabilities, please use part number 91500-08 for the datalogging unit with software and cable package 91500-81 for computer connection.
