  • Q:

We keep horses in a field where the ground around the water trough becomes very muddy during the winter and need to transfer water to a portable trough some distance away to prevent horses becoming mired. We need the suction hose to be long enough (4-5 meters) so that the person pumping can stand on solid ground. - is this product suitable? Alternatively, can the suction hose be extended?
    Asked on 2/9/2017 by Judith

The suction hose could be extended, however, it may be difficult to pump with the additional length.

  • Q:

I need to remove water from a bunded oil tank. Thus the pump will be at ground level, and the suction end of the hose will have to rise approximately 6 feet and then go down into the tank for 5 feet. Is the length of hose sufficient for this? Obviously the outlet pipe will discharge into a bucket beside the pump but (ignorant question) in the diagram which is the suction pipe and which is the discharge?

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

Yes, this has a head of 10ft so this should be fine for your application.

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

This item is a hand pump recommended for pumping fluid out of drums. The inlet tube is recommended to be submersed into the fluid. Therefore I do not think this pump would be suitable for the application.

  • Q:

Would this be suitable for emptying water that is muddy or is there a probability it will clog up? Odd question I know, but its for my geese's tub water and it gets a little muddy at times...
    Thanks

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

It would depend on the viscosity. This pump can handle water and petroleum like viscosity. The tube has a 3/8" ID tubing so particulates would have to be smaller than the ID of the tubing to prevent clogging as well.

    Comments about None Hand-operated siphon/lift pail pump, 32 strokes/gallon:

    Works quite well, but:
    - Smaller than the photo makes it look -- meaning you need to pump a lot of short forth-and-back strokes.
    - Not so smart design - the handle is such that your knuckles hit the shaft when you pump.

    The Hand-operated siphon/lift pail pump

      Comments about None Hand-operated siphon/lift pail pump, 32 strokes/gallon:

I use this hand-pump to transfer diesel fuel from a floor-standing 5-gallon pail to the fuel tank of John Deere 2320 garden tractor. The pump works properly. The lower inflow tube is 6'-long; the upper outflow tube is 3' (not the other way around as I read somewhere on-line). The pump has to be hand-held up in the air in my case, which is not a problem and is even convenient (I do not have to bend). Pumps effectively. Counting strokes is a good idea to know when to stop to avoid overflow. My wife helps me: holds the end of the outflow tube to the funnel with filter. This product can be recommended for an occasional use by owners of small-size tractors and similar equipment who do not have to refuel on the daily basis. I gave it only a 3-star rating because I thought it was overpriced. Otherwise, it is a perfectly functional product.

      Comments about None Hand-operated siphon/lift pail pump, 32 strokes/gallon:

I used this to prime a siphon hose to drain a pond. Had to pull the water over a 4 foot embankment using a 20 foot hose. Worked great. Lots of strokes to bring the water up.

        Comments about None Hand-operated siphon/lift pail pump, 32 strokes/gallon:

Simple and effective. I needed a manual pump and I was dubious of the "automatic / battery" operated type hand pumps as to their effectiveness. So I purchased this manual one. The product is well constructed and uses thick tubing. It should last for a long time. [...]works great.
