      and how about liniearity between temperature and voltage for this product, can i control the heat temperature??

        This unit will be fine for heating 5 L of water.

        Adjusting the heat output on these units will require a controller. There are several different types of controllers, but generally you can use a variable-voltage output controller, such as item 36225-59, to control the voltage input to the element; which corresponds to temperature output. An alternative would be a unit that uses feedback from a temperature sensor to adjust the output, such as items 36225-90 or 36225-61.

      I want to use this heater to keep a 55 gallon plastic barrel of spring water, stored in my yard, from freezing.

        This heater should only be partially submerged, so I would worry about it getting wet outside if not properly protected. If protected it would work. We also have 55 gallon plastic drum blankets, please reference part number 09300-60 as another option.
