  • Q:

Can the RVA501 head be applied flush against a return grill to measure flow? This is not possible with the RVA801.
Asked on 11/6/2010 by PES from Columbia, MD

    • A:

According to the manufacturer (Alnor HVAC Handbook) the anemometer should be held 1 to 2 inches from the grill. In the past we would hold them on the grill and use a .85 correction factor. Here is the verbage fromt he HVAC handbook "Rotating vanes can be used on return grilles provided the vanes of the grille are straight with no deflection.
Place the rotating vane approximately 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 50 cm) away from the grille and divide the face of the grille into equal areas (refer to Appendix A) with the vane head taking a measurement in each location. The readings should be added and the sum divided by the total number of readings to obtain an average velocity." I always complained about the Alnor head, until I read theior handbook.

According to the Manufacturer, both units are designed to measure unevenly distributed or fluctuating flows through heating and cooling coils, diffusers, grilles, and filters.

  • Q:

What is the range of air velocity for this instrument?
We would need to measure velocities from 2 to 20 m/sec.

  • Q:

Can this instrument be used to measure slot velocities, such as the slots on exhaust hoods? Slots can be 1 inch or less??
Asked on 8/9/2010 by Bubbo from Laplace, LA

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

The RVA501 has a 4" diameter rotating vane and is too large to measure velocity in a 1" slot. I would suggest you consider a thermal anemometer that uses a probe about 1/4" OD, such as our 10200-02, with data logging software and module, 10200-10 and 10200-20 respectively.

  • Q:

Is this instrument intrinsically safe; ie., for use in Class I Div 2 areas?
Asked on 8/9/2010 by Bubbo from Laplace, LA

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

No, this unit is not intrinsically safe. Please instead consider item 10375-34 which is intrinsically safe though with a lower range.

  • Q:

Has this product been certified as intrinsically safe?

This product is not certified intrinsically safe.

  • Q:

Is this anemometer directional - will it indicate flow in either direction through the vanes with a +/- value?
Asked on 7/6/2010 by Anonymous from Bay Area, CA

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

The head is reversible on this unit, however the reading in the opposite direction will not show as a negative value. This unit will not indicate direction.

  • Q:

How Many data points will it store?
    Asked on 5/5/2010 by Anonymous

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

This unit will store up to 12,700 samples and 100 test ID's.
