Digital Clamp Meters
Davis Instruments offers an extensive range of clamp meters for all of your measurement and trouble shooting applications. Digital clamp meters features include built-in DMMs, True RMS current/voltage, resistance, capacitance, frequency, temperature, non-contact infrared, data logging, diode test, continuity and more!
Select a CAT II, III or IV, 300V, 600V, or 1000V rated clamp meter to measure up to 2000A and 1000V, with up to 0.5% of reading accuracy, to handle even your most demanding applications.
Clamp meters are used for these main reasons:
- Convenience and safety -
Using a meter to measure current requires that you to break the circuit and insert the meter in the line. A digital clamp meter is much easier and safer to use since it allows you to take measurements without opening the circuit.
- Range -
Most multimeters can only measure current to 10 amps. Clamp meters can be used to measure much higher currents.
There are two basic configurations for current clamps - the stand-alone digital clamp meter with a built-in read out; and the current probe, an accessory type clamp that plugs into a meter or scope. Both types are available as either current transformers (CTs) that measure AC current only; or Hall-effect, which measure AC and DC current.
Choosing clamp meters
- When looking for clamp meters with the right features for the job, consider the following:
- Do you need a clamp meter to measure DC current?
- What are the minimum and maximum current ratings required for the clamp meter?
- Do you need a clamp meter to monitor current over time and capture the maximum current drawn?
- Do you need a clamp meter to measure frequency (this is useful when measuring adjustable speed drives)?
- Do you need a digital clamp meter to measure crest or instantaneous peak capability for detecting non-sinusoidal current?
- Is it a True-rms clamp meter? These clamp meters give more accurate readings for non-linear loads that draw non-sinusoidal (distorted current).
